Zug Island

2013, Painting

Acrylic on canvas, 48"x48"
A painting about Zug island, a manmade island to the west of Detroit. Zug island was purchased by the Zugs as a conservation area for migrating birds and also to protect its status as a sacred native burial ground. Although there is still a part of the island reserved for migrating birds, a majority of the island is highly industrial steel mill.

Recently, Windsorites in west and south Windsor were complaining about a bassy humming noise. It was later proven this noise was caused by Zug island. I liked the idea that the buried native people were haunting the settlers disrespecting their lands. I made this painting about it.
